1. Swim with turtles at N’Gouja
N'Gouja beach, in the south of Grande-Terre, is known for sea turtles grazing on seagrass close to shore. A simple mask is enough. Keep your distance and never touch them.
2. Watch whales and dolphins
During the austral winter, roughly July to October, humpback whales come into the lagoon. Dolphins can be seen all year. Choose operators who follow approach rules.
3. The white-sand islet
Reachable by boat, this sandbank in the middle of the lagoon only appears at low tide. Day trips often combine the islet, snorkelling and dolphin watching.
4. Lake Dziani on Petite-Terre
This green crater lake can be discovered on a short walk. The view over the lagoon from the crater rim is worth it, especially late in the day.
5. Mount Choungui
With its pointed silhouette, Choungui dominates the south of the island. The climb is steep but offers one of Mayotte's best views. Start early and bring plenty of water.
6. Mamoudzou market
Tropical fruit, spices and local produce: the covered market in Mamoudzou is a great way into Mahoran life, a short walk from the ferry.
Good to know
The airport is on Petite-Terre: the ferry (barge) links Petite-Terre to Mamoudzou. We send you all directions before you arrive and are reachable 7 days a week.
